After a letter from the Tantramar-Strait Shores Community Task Force asks municipal council to actively seek provincial and federal funding to support housing growth, CHMA looks into the success of another New Brunswick community in accessing the federal Housing Accelerator Fund.
Sussex CAO Scott Hatcher says the newly amalgamated municipality jumped on the chance for federal dollars from the fund. After the announcement in March 2023, Hatcher says town staff thought, “well, there’s an opportunity, we’re not missing out on that one.”
Sussex has received $3.2 million dollars through the fund, to be spent on developing partnerships with non-profits interested in affordable housing, amending their zoning bylaws to allow for more houses in some neighbourhoods, and updating their infrastructure planning, to make sure they have the streets, sidewalks, pipes and sewage lagoons to accommodate more people.
