Nathan Cullen, MLA for Stikine and Minister of Water, Lands and Resource Stewardship, announced a $195 million investment in upgrading highways 37, 37A, and 51 in Northwest BC. He made the announcement on July 9 in Smithers.
The upgrades will include passing lanes, chain-up areas, and improved Wi-Fi connectivity to enhance safety and support economic growth, particularly in the mining sector.
Funding from both federal and provincial governments, under their critical mineral strategy, underscores the importance of these highways in accessing critical minerals for technologies like electric cars and cell phones. Construction is expected to begin as early as next spring, with timelines for completion depending on project complexity. Collaboration with local communities, including Indigenous nations, ensures the project meets regional needs.
