Humber College recently announced that students from 8 surrounding First Nations communities will be offered free tuition beginning in the fall of 2024. The move makes Humber College the first in Canada to offer free tuition to indigenous students.
The 8 communities where students will be offered free tuition are the following: Alderville First Nation, Chippewas of Georgina Island, Curve Lake First Nation, Hiawatha First Nation, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation,Mississaugas of the Scugog Island First Nation, Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte and Six Nations of the Grand River
Jason Seright, vice-president, Inclusion and Belonging at Humber says the college wanted to show that it’s serious about truth and reconciliation. “For us, we made sure that there’s some action behind truth and reconciliation and that was important for us to do this.”
Seright says it’s the college’s hope that this will allow for students who may not have been able to receive funding in past years through their First Nation will now be able to become enrolled.
