Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante announced Tuesday that the City is launching a public consultation on homelessness.
Led by the office of public consultations (OCPM), the process will be open to the general public. The City stressed that this will require the OCPM to find ways of including people in situations of homelessness.
Plante was joined by partners from Quebec, Montreal’s regional director of public health, and other health and homelessness stakeholders for the announcement at city hall. But it was Plante who faced the bulk of questions – in particular for the City’s policy of clearing encampments without the ability to place everyone in adequate accommodations.
Though they couldn’t give a concrete timeline, the City said the consultation process will likely begin this fall, with the bulk of consultations themselves happening in the winter and a report with recommendations tabled this spring.
