Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) announced the removal of a Tall Grass Prairie at Chiefswood National Historic Site that took place last week.
SNEC says the decision stemmed from the tall grass prairie needing proper maintenance due to a lack of a prescribed burn in recent years.
The space is now to be repurposed for future projects and programming.
Tall grass prairie is a ecosystem where tall grass and plants grow and often support a wide range of species and animals. These ecosystems often require a prescribed burn to allow for invasive species to be removed.
Council announced the changes in a media release yesterday.
” The restoration efforts aim to preserve the authenticity and historical significance of the Chiefswood National Historic Site while enhancing its ecological value in preserving our shared heritage.”
SNEC did not respond to a request for comment from CJKS and say further updates on the space will be provided when available.
