Due to a surge in surrendered animals and a decline in adoptions, the Northumberland Humane Society has suspended new regular intakes until at least the end of July.
Executive director Henny Venus said the shelter on Theatre Road between Cobourg and Port Hope is full, with about 150 animals in their facilities and more in foster care.
The Humane Society is appealing to the public for donations of much-needed kitten and cat food, litter, cleaning supplies, and any financial contributions to support its mounting veterinary expenses and emergency surgeries.
Emergency intakes will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and the Humane Society will reassess the situation at the end of July.
