Samonix, a start-up based out of Chelsea, is looking to create a land-based Atlantic Salmon farming operation in the Pontiac region.
Rémi Bertrand, Director of Development for the company, explained that he had helped facilitate their purchase of land in the Litchfield Industrial Site, and they offered to bring him aboard. He explained that due to the government’s recent move to ban open-net salmon farming in British Columbia, they saw an opening for land-based operations.
At the most recent MRC Pontiac meeting, the project received a letter of support from council, specifically for their application for a 12 MW electrical hookup. Bertrand explained that all projects that require more than 5 MW of electricity have to be vetted by Hydro-Quebec and the Ministry of Economy, and they submitted their application back in March.
