The Ministry of Education and Childcare announced earlier this month that the Cortes Island School would be awarded $195,000 in funding to build a new, more accessible playground.
The funding comes from the Playground Equipment Program.
Serene Watson, parent and member of the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC), said the announcement has been “well received” in the community.
“I’m, for one, excited about hopefully replacing the gravel that is underneath all of the play structures with something else, because I think many of the parents are tired of the rocks in socks and rocks being thrown around and like bits of gravel and gravel dust everywhere.”
The school principal Michael Datura and the PAC will work together to create a plan for the new playground this fall. At that time, they plan to share the design with the community.
