A new cultural centre and neighbourhood is rising out of the ruins of a World War 2 military base just outside of Picton in Prince Edward County.
The site of the air training base was known as Camp Picton and was an operational military base until 1969. It was purchased by PEC Community Partners in 2021, and since then it has been undergoing an extensive and ambitious revitalization of many of the heritage buildings. Its new name is Base 31.
Led by CEO and Order of Canada recipient Tim Jones and Chief Placemaker Assaf Weisz, Base 31 will be the heart of a 750 acre future development which will include a range of housing to form neighbourhoods with retail, restaurants, parks and places to work and create.
Last Saturday was the grand opening of The Commissary, an open air food and drink market at Base 31. CJPE attended the opening.
