Wellington County OPP are urgently warning residents of Centre Wellington of an active fraud in the community.
Const. Joshua Cunningham says the reports of fraud started this past weekend.
A person calls saying the victim’s grandson has been in a car accident involving a pregnant woman in Guelph or surrounding area and needs between $4,000-$7,000 to post bail. A “bail bondsman” then will visit the victim’s home to collect the money.
The suspect is described by OPP as a Black man with an average build and of average height. His hair is in dreadlocks. The suspect does not park in the victim’s driveway so there is no vehicle description.
Cunningham urges anyone getting an emergency call from a relative take a minute to think and verify what you are being told.
Anyone with information is urged to call Wellington County OPP at 1 888 310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1 800 222-TIPS (8477). You can also submit a tip online.
