A delegation to Mapleton Township council changed some minds about allowing gun hunting on Sundays.
Right now, only bow hunting is allowed on Sundays in the Township. Ray Kuper argued at Tuesday night’s council meeting that gun hunting was one of the safest sports, accounting for just 0.001 per cent of sporting injuries. He did not provide a source the statistic.
He also pointed out the shot gun hunt for deer is only one week a year so the ban applies to a single day. He says that extra day would benefit hunters who work during the week.
Coun. Marlene Ottens told council while she is not a fan of guns, after speaking with Kuper and other hunters, she’s changed her opinion and would vote differently.
Council directed staff to draft a bylaw allowing Sunday gun hunting to be brought before a future council meeting.
