Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension borough council tabled a motion to ban fusions Tuesday night.
Housing activists say fusions, when two units are merged to form a larger one, are increasingly being used to push longtime tenants out. Other boroughs have already taken steps to ban the practice.
The motion has the support of the Comite d’Action de Parc Extension (CAPE), who staged a positive demonstration in favour of council’s decision. CKUT spoke to CAPE’s Amy Darwish about how this motion fits into the committee’s ultimate goal: the banning of all permits that would lead to eviction.
Residents will be able to give their input at a public meeting June 19, with written comments accepted between June 6-13.
