Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) has announced the imminent demolition and replacement of Kingston’s Bascule Bridge on the LaSalle Causeway due to significant structural damage, rendering repair unfeasible.
The closure of the bridge since March has had a major impact on the Kingston community, disrupting Kingstonian’s regular routes and affecting the city’s integral tourism industry.
The demolition contract is set to be awarded soon, with work starting by the end of next week. This will temporarily discontinue pedestrian access, however the channel is expected to reopen for marine navigation by early July. PSPC is also devising plans for a temporary solution for vehicle, cyclist, and pedestrian, alongside constructing a permanent replacement bridge.
While exact timelines have not been released, PSPC advises the public to stay informed through official channels for updates.
