A committee of Canadian senators is considering a private members bill that would see the federal government declare the Chignecto Isthmus transportation corridor – and the dyke system that protects it – a matter of national jurisdiction.
CHMA News listens in as New Brunswick senator Jim Quinn, Premier Blaine Higgs, and Amlamgog (Fort Folly) First Nation Chief Rebecca Knockwood talk to a senate committee about whether or not the federal government should take control of the project.
“The Atlantic region is being told to prepare for an extremely active hurricane season,” Chief Knockwood told the committee. “Storms and the effects of climate change in this area will get worse. Action needs to be taken to protect this area.”
