Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation (SNGRDC) announced recently that they have secured three successful bids to become fifty-percent partners in new battery storage facilities in southwestern Ontario.
The move is part of the Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator’s (IESO) procurement of ten battery storage facilities within the province.
With the new projects, SNGRDC’s energy portfolio will grow to over one gigawatt of energy storage, making it the largest Indigenous holder of energy storage in North America, according to the organization.
SNGRDC CEO Matt Jamieson said they are continuing to grow the organization’s energy portfolio, adding that they’re also finalizing ownership interest in the Hagersville Energy Storage Project.
In 2023, SNGRDC also announced they would become fifty-percent partners in the Oneida Energy Storage Project, the largest energy storage project in Canada.
SNGRDC says a community investment review period will take place. Community engagement sessions will also be scheduled to provide more information on the projects and gain community input.
