An event of remembrance was held on Wednesday to mark 20 years since Cobourg Police Constable Chris Garrett was murdered in the line of duty.
On May 15, 2004, Constable Chris Garrett responded to a reported robbery at the site of the former Cobourg hospital in the area of Darcy and Chapel streets. He was fatally wounded by a slash to the throat, but was able to shoot his assailant, thus interrupting a chain of events that may have had tragic consequences in Cobourg that night as the attacker had more plans for harm that evening.
The event was held on Wednesday at Chris Garrett Memorial Park on Birchwood Trail. It was attended by Garrett’s mother and sisters along with current and former officers with Cobourg Police, Port Hope Police and Northumberland OPP, local politicians, municipal staff and community members.
