Nelson resident Elizabeth Cunningham revealed at at yesterday’s Nelson’s city council meeting that the black-capped chickadee has won the vote to become Nelson’s city bird.
Choosing a city bird is one of several steps in becoming a Nature Canada Bird Friendly City. This is a project Cunningham has been working on for more than a year; she first presented it to city council in May 2023.
According to Nature Canada, a bird friendly city effectively mitigates key threats to birds, restores nature so populations can thrive, and creates protective municipal policies among others.
The City of Nelson is yet to vote on adopting the black-capped chickadee as the official bird but they are expected to do so at a later meeting.
