The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) and Friends of Cortes Island (FOCI) are teaming up to tackle a recent flooding issue at Kwas Pond.
According to FOCI’s Executive Director Helen Hall, the flooding is caused by beaver activity, but she says the beaver habitats are important.
“Beavers dam streams and they create wetlands…wetlands are also important because they help ameliorate flooding and help us adapt to climate change.”
FOCI will be hosting a free, all-ages event on May 1 at Kwas Pond to help educate and inform residents on how to co-exist with beavers, and learn about the benefits of these local creatures.
