The City of Toronto has announced that the sakura (cherry) blossoms across Toronto will be entering full bloom mid to late April. This bloom marks 65 years since their introduction to the City.
In 1959 the trees were given to Toronto as a gift from the Japanese ambassador Toru-Hagiwara for helping relocated Japanese Canadians following the Second World War.
Since then multiple donations have been made under the Sakura Project. Over three thousand trees were planted across Ontario over from 2000 to 2012 when the project ended.
Other than High Park, places to see the trees include Cedar Ridge Park, Trinity Bell Woods Park and Woodbine Park. A full list can be found on the City of Toronto website.
