The green bin was a topic of discussion earlier this week at a virtual meeting of the Prince Edward County Agricultural Advisory Committee.
Albert Paschkowiak, Supervisor of PEC’s Environmental and Sustainability Operational Services, presented a detailed report of the Organics Feasibility Study outlining the potential for the County to construct its own disposal facility. A report by staff in 2022 had concluded that factoring in the anticipated population growth and contractor fees, costs for disposing of green bin waste will increase substantially. Council then requested a study to evaluate the green bin program in an effort to reduce disposal costs.
Recently, eliminating the green bin program altogether was suggested at a council meeting. However, once the program has been introduced to a municipality, it is required to maintain or improve the program in compliance with the Food and Organic Waste Policy issued by the Ministry of the Environment Conservation and Parks.
There will be public consultation prior to the project going to Council.
