Six Nations Health Services (SNHS) Animal Wellness Program has not secured funding to run the program beyond the 2023/2024 fiscal year.
SNHS presented a request to Six Nations Elected Council April 15. SNHS asked for funds to be allocated to cover the program’s costs in the amount of $290,000, and to agree to fund the program annually in future fiscal years in the amount of $350,000.
The Animal Wellness Program provides supports to keep the community’s animals healthy and safe. It was previously supported through Ontario First Nations Limited Partnership funds and surplus COVID-19 funds for the last three fiscal years.
The new funding source was identified as Six Nations of the Grand River (Council) Economic Development Trust, which council controls the funding for.
Council approved the $290,000 to fund the 2023/2024 program. A decision will come later on whether the program will be annually funded through council’s Economic Development Trust.
