CHMA heads down to Wheaton’s All-in-One Redemption Centre in the Sackville Industrial Park to see how they are faring with new rules that make consumers eligible to get back the full deposit on beverage containers, while a new ‘container recycling fee’ gets hidden in prices.
Since April 1, New Brunswick consumers who return their beverage containers have been getting their full deposit back, doubling the cash payout on a bag of cans and bottles. That means that in the months leading up to the change, people were holding back, waiting for the refund increase.
Darren Wheaton says volumes at his redemption centre have doubled since April 1, but he’s waiting to see what will happen to redemption levels before making any increases to the staff at Wheaton’s.
