A Cultural Exchange Week was held last week in Terrace.
In partnership with the Kermode Friendship Society, Kevin Lewis, director of the Kâniyasihk culture camps from Ministikwan Lake Cree Nation in Saskatchewan Treaty 6 territory, brought with him 14 other members and students to Terrace for a Cultural Exchange Week.
From April 8-12th, he and his group traveled around the north in the Terrace/Kitimat and Nass Valley area to share stories, powwow dancing and hide tanning customs. They also rebuilt and expanded the sweat lodge located at Kermode Friendship Society where most of the cultural exchange had been held.
On Thursday, three dance groups and performed and shared their cultures: Gitlax̱dax Sayt-K’il̓im G̱oothl Nisg̱a’a and Kermode drum group performed along with Lewis and his group.
Lewis spoke with CFNR about keeping Indigenous language and culture alive and the significance of cultural exchange.
