The Regional Water Supply Master Plan was presented to the public last Thursday night in Wellington where Mayor Ferguson, and several councillors, senior municipal staff and consultants were present to answer questions and address concerns.
Water treatment and delivery has been a contentious issue for several years as the residents fear for substantial increases in their taxes. Water rates are high in Prince Edward County and are set every five years. Consultations with the public will be taking place to determine the new rates for 2026.
The presentation was divided into four main sections with information boards showing the potential options for water delivery throughout the County. This plan was developed with consideration to the projected water demand by 2047 and with the estimated population growth exceeding 38,000 to the two main urban areas.
Some plans include connecting Wellington to Bloomfield/Picton with underground water pipelines, replacing water and wastewater treatment plants and building a mega waterworks plant in Wellington all to the tune of at least $200 million.
