Donna Hais of the Fair Care Alliance says there is an inequity of health care currently on Vancouver Island for those who live in the north and central area compared to those who live in the south end.
Vancouver Island has several general hospitals such as in Comox, Campbell River, and soon Duncan but only three tertiary hospitals. Two are in Victoria and other in Nanaimo. But Hais says although the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) is a tertiary hospital, it only offers one tertiary program for kidney care.
Hais says those who live in the north and central areas are missing proper care, especially in the lack of cancer and heart disease care.
Hais presented to Nanaimo city council on April 8 about the need for improved care at the NRGH and called for a new patient tower.
