Earlier this month, the Open Psychedelic Understanding Society (OPUS) opened in Glade, BC.
OPUS aims to provide psychedelic assisted therapy to patients. Started by Anita Melin, a psychologist, registered clinical counsellor, and certified a psychedelic assisted therapist, OPUS will treat patients using a macro dose of ketamine, MDMA or psilocybin.
No patients have been treated with these medications at OPUS to date but screening processes to determine whether a patient is suitable for these treatments are underway.
Currently, Canada has approved psychedelic work under the special access program for people with PTSD, treatment resistant depression and end of life anxiety due to a terminal diagnosis. For OPUS, to treat a patient with these conditions legally, the patient must first receive a prescription from a medical doctor.
Melin joined CJLY to discuss psychedelic assisted therapy, the laws and stigma surrounding it and the Open Psychedelic Understanding Society located at 2130 Glade Road.
