Tensions flared at the recent city council meeting surrounding a contentious pool tax proposal and subsequent vote.
Councillor Laure Letarte-Lavoie’s decision to attend with her newborn sparked debate, with discussions reaching a boiling point as the vote narrowly passed 8 to 7.
Criticism was directed at Letarte-Lavoie for bringing her newborn baby to the meeting, and insinuations that she only attended to secure the vote, added fuel to the fire. The situation escalated further with the announcement of Council Executive President Danielle Berthold’s resignation. Pressure, veiled threats and a perceived lack of respect among members were cited as reasons.
Mayor Beaudin intervened, emphasizing Letarte-Lavoie’s right to participate and denouncing disrespectful remarks aimed at her.
