Nelson resident Elizabeth Cunningham has set the submission date for choosing Nelson’s city bird on Earth Day April 22.
Choosing a city bird is one of several steps to become a Nature Canada Bird Friendly City. This a project Cunningham has been working on for over a year. She first presented the project to city council on May 28, 2023 and received their support, though many of the future steps to be certified will need approval from council again.
Cunningham says she has received over 50 submissions for the city bird so far and leading vote getters are the black-capped chickadee and the osprey.
She is hoping to have enough work done to be accepted by Nature Canada during their next approval period in September. If accepted, Nelson will be the first bird friendly city in BC’s interior.
