Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s Democratic Party, says he’s concerned about the potential reversal or cutting of Indigenous service in the upcoming federal budget.
“In Budget 2023, the government committed to reducing spending by $14.1 billion over the next five years, starting in 2023–24,” according to the Government of Canada website. In order to meet this commitment, Indigenous Services Canada has a list of spending reductions listed on the website.
Singh spoke with CFNR about some of the concerns that the NDP have regarding the federal budget cuts and the NDP’s calls on the Liberals to reverse these cuts.
Singh expresses worry about the broad impact of funding cuts on Indigenous communities across the country. He criticizes the lack of action on Indigenous relations and raises concerns about the Conservative Party’s approach.
The next federal budget will be coming up soon on April 16.
