Just a few hours after thousands of Edmonton city workers were set to go on strike, a tentative deal was reached between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52.
Around 6,000 city employees were set to walk off the job at 11 a.m. Thursday morning after years of failed negotiations between the two parties over wage increases. Early Thursday morning, the strike was temporarily postponed to Friday morning as the two sides went back to the negotiating table. By noon on Thursday, the tentative deal was reached, and the strike was called off.
The deal will remain tentative until members ratify the agreement. According to the union, the deal will see employees getting a $1,000 lump sum payment in lieu of a wage increase for 2021. Then, they’ll see a 1.25% raise for 2022, a 2% increase in 2023 and a 3% increase in 2024. It all accumulates as an immediate 6.25% raise.
Both the city and union won’t comment further until the deal is finalized.
