“Deyodyohkwahnhasta”, which means “for the people by the people”, is a word which was explored in depth at an 11 hour meeting on Saturday March 9 held at Yogi’s Barn on Six Nations.
“We have our own constitution” says Tehahenteh Frank Miller, a fluent Mohawk speaker and well known influential voice within the Haudenosaunee communities. The duties of the men and the women to the young and old ones, and to Creation itself, and to each other were spoken about throughout the day, as well as the duties and roles of the Chiefs and clan mothers to the people.
Other topics included land treaties, self-governance and the growth and wellbeing of Haudenosaunee economies.
There were several featured guest speakers who facilitated the meeting — Tehahenteh Frank Miller, Karahsaraken Loran Thompson and Tekarontake Paul Delaronde, all who are fluent Mohawk speakers and influential voices within Haudenosaunee communities. Approximately 120 people attended the gathering.
