When the Governor General’s office called Celeste Johnston to tell her she would be inducted into the Order of Canada, she almost didn’t answer.
The medical researcher had been getting a lot of spam calls from the Ottawa area code, so she hesitated. But she did answer and it was a representative from Governor General Mary Simon’s office telling her she would be named an officer of the Order of Canada. Johnston is a longtime professor at McGill University who retired to Hunts Point, N.S., with her husband in 2010.
“I was a little incredulous. I just don’t think of myself as someone who would get the Order or Canada.”
She has known about her award since December 2021, but the ceremony was delayed because of COVID 19. Johnston received her long awaited award last month.
