Outside a real estate fair held at the Spanish Portuguese Synagogue on Mar. 5, protestors and counter protesters clashed over the alleged sale of properties in the West Bank, a territory considered illegally occupied by Canada and the UN.
The protest, organized by Independent Jewish Voices and local pro-Palestine groups, was met with counter protestors waving Israeli flags. CJLO was not able to verify what took place inside the event, but the website promoting the event mentions several West Bank settlements.
One protester told CJLO why it was so important to demonstrate against the fair. “To see this, in a house of faith goes against basic Talmudic values in the Torah, it says to not covet your neighbor’s property. You don’t have to go to shul every day to know that this is a crime against the very notions that they built their faith on,” they said.
CJLO was unable to interview counter-protesters, after being denied access by what appeared to be private security or volunteers around the synagogue.
