In a press release on March 4, the BC government announced over $1 million in funding to bring high-speed broadband internet access to 310 homes in the Kootenay Lake area. This funding is part of a federal plan to connect 100% of Canadians to high speed internet by 2030.
Networks will be built and operated by the Kaslo infoNet Society. The provincial and federal governments each provided $427,382 to connect 262 homes in Ainsworth Hot Springs, Argenta, Cooper Creek, Howser, Kaslo, Lardeau, Meadow Creek, and Shutty Bench. Each govenment provided $99,141 to connect 48 homes in Johnsons Landing, Kaslo, and Riondel.
Some communities are expected to have high speed internet use by the end of 2024, others will wait until the end of 2026.
CJLY spoke about these projects with Nelson-Creston MLA Brittny Anderson.
