The Northwest BC Resource Benefit Alliance (RBA) has announced a five-year, $250 million agreement for revenue sharing across local governments in the region.
Sean Bujtas, Terrace mayor and RBA co-chair, Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine, discusses the advocacy efforts and progress made in securing this agreement.
Advocacy efforts and lobbying played a crucial role in securing the agreement, Bujtas said, with conversations and negotiations with the premier and provincial government officials.
Collective revenue sharing is important as the impact of industry stretches across the region, Bujtas added, and communities often experience the impacts without seeing the revenue.
The mayor expressed excitement about the agreement and the opportunity to build more livable and attractive communities in the northwest. A funding model for distributing the funds will be worked out with the provincial government in future, with a focus on addressing critical infrastructure needs and revitalization projects.
