Indigenous Astronomy as told by the Haudenosaunee and a loom beading event will take place as part of the Trail Gatherings leading up to the total eclipse on Monday April 8, 2024. It will be held at the Woodland Cultural Centre on February 28th.
The event that will “fill your Spirit with stardust and astronomical knowledge” will be conducted by two people — Samantha Doxtator who is Wolf Clan from Oneida; and lehstoseranon:nha (Dawn), Bear Clan from Akwesasane.
Dawn will explain the eclipse that happened approximately 1000 years ago when the Haudenosaunee united under the Great White Pine to hear the Great Law.
Leading up to the eclipse Samantha and Dawn will walk through five Mohawk communities and collectively all the women will create a Wampum Belt to honour Clan Mothers. Women from each community will have a chance to sit together and learn how to make a belt on a loom.
