The Trans Patient Union started as a group of students pushing for better gender-affirming care at McGill. It’s now become a hub to help Montrealers navigate the complex, ad hoc world of trans healthcare – an area in which most doctors are never trained.
Union member Jacob Williams says he routinely hears about doctors who use outdated or discriminatory practices, despite having many transgender patients. “There’s no way for patients to know this going in and there’s really nobody holding these doctors and providers accountable for how they’re providing care.”
That’s what he and the Union are trying to change – offering resources and best practices not only to patients but to healthcare providers as well.
