Cobourg resident James Bisson doesn’t think the recent public engagement sessions from the County about a proposed new transition shelter will make a difference in the outcome, and he thinks the County needs to take a different approach to shelter.
His group, We Are Cobourg, is hosting an open mic and petition launch Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Best Western opposing 310 Division Street becoming the new home for the Transition House shelter, which is operated by Northumberland County.
The County has recently held in-person and virtual public engagement sessions to provide information and get feedback. The plan for the relocated Transition House to 310 Division street provides about 35 low barrier shelter spaces available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, access to a bed, food services and support services and more.
The current shelter has just four rooms, each equipped with bunk beds, and can accommodate a maximum of 22 individuals.
