Many Montreal tenants are grappling with rent hikes and eviction notices amidst lease renewal season and a controversial housing reform bill by the CAQ government.
Sharron* is an NDG resident and single parent facing eviction from her home of ten years due to landlord repossession. “The last thing I want to do is move, especially with the insane rent prices at the moment,” Sharron told CJLO. “So to find an affordable place for my kids and I on one salary is going to be very difficult.”
Andrés Fontecilla, Quebec Solidaire’s housing critic, called for amendments to the bill, emphasizing the need for “better protection” against evictions. Fontecilla said he hopes Quebec’s housing minister will hear the “anger” of the population.
